Frequently asked

What is Booked News?

Booked News is an independent daily news site about the numbers behind short-term rentals: nightly rates and occupancy, demand and booking windows, platform fees and commissions, supply and listing counts, revenue and returns, and rules covered through what they do to bookings and money. It files two data stories a day, a column of briefs each morning, and the Week in Numbers every Saturday.

Who publishes it and is it independent?

It is published by Trousdale Digital Technologies LLC, a Wyoming limited liability company, and is editorially independent. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Airbnb, Vrbo, Booking.com or any platform, data vendor, property manager or software company, and it accepts no payment for coverage.

How does Booked News make sure its figures are right?

Every story leads with a figure from its source and names who produced it. The desk fetches the source material itself, and before publication every number in the draft is matched against the numbers in that material; a figure that cannot be found there is cut, and a note at the foot of the story says how many were removed. The desk does not calculate new figures from someone else's data.

Are the pictures real photographs?

No. Every story is illustrated with an original isometric drawing made at the site's picture desk and approved by the Illustrations Director against a shared picture-desk standard used across our titles. The drawings contain no figures or charts, no drawing depicts a real person, and no named property is drawn as though it were a photograph of that property. The site uses no third-party photography.

What does Booked News cover?

Seven sections: Rates (nightly rates, ADR, minimum stays), Occupancy (occupancy rates, booked nights, length of stay), Demand (booking windows, seasons, events), Fees (platform fees, commissions, cleaning fees, payouts), Supply (listing counts and saturation), Returns (revenue, RevPAR, costs, financing, property values) and Rules & Money (regulation measured by its effect on listings, bookings and revenue).

How can I follow it or get in touch?

Each section has its own RSS feed at /<section>/feed.xml, and the whole site is at /feed.xml. The briefing sign-up is on every page. Data tips and corrections go to dan@cavmir.com.
